Keep MOAS at Sea

Campaign Details

The Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) is a Malta-based registered foundation that performs search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Andaman seas. MOAS launched after humanitarians Christopher and Regina Catrambone saw an egregious lack of response to hundreds of drownings off the Italian coastline in October 2013. These drownings occurred due to overcrowding on migrant ships. These vessels were filled with occupants seeking asylum from violent conditions in various regions of East and North Africa. Feeling compelled to act, the Catrambones used their private funds to convert a fishing boat to a rescue vessel, and train a team of skilled sailors to perform search and rescue operations.  Since then, MOAS has grown into a global NGO operating in world’s deadliest migrant travel routes to help save lives.

I learned about MOAS through a news article a friend posted on Facebook. Seeing such a troubling humanitarian issue, I felt moved to start fundraising. Since MOAS is completely privately funded, it relies heavily on donations to stay in operation.
